Staying On Track: Black’s Next Steps

When we last shared Black’s story, he had stepped into a Lead Associate role on the Hastings Street route and was looking ahead to two major goals: securing stable housing and getting the certifications he would need to become a First Aid Attendant. Since then, Black has kept moving forward.

Recently, Black signed a one-year Lead Associate contract with MP and is now working Monday to Friday afternoon shifts, with opportunities to pick up additional morning shifts when available. It marks a very different season from before he joined Mission Possible, when his lack of certifications and challenges related to his parole status made it difficult to find work.

Black has also continued to grow as a Lead Associate on the Hastings route. Having worked many of the Clean Team routes before becoming a lead, he says Hastings feels especially meaningful because he can see the impact of the work. “Seeing us working and building a relationship with the people that are on the street and treating them like human beings... it does have an impact,” he shares.

As a lead, Black is learning how to support different personalities, train new team members, and keep communication clear. He says communication can be one of the biggest challenges, especially in the summer heat, but he approaches the work with patience and compassion. “We’re here to work, do this good thing, also earn some money,” he explains. “As a lead, I’m making sure everyone is getting along and letting them know that we’re going to take breaks, especially if it's a super hot day, but we’re still getting the job done. One of the things that I want to make sure of is that everybody is feeling good, because if you're not feeling good, the work isn't gonna be good, and it's just not gonna work out.”

Having stability in his life has changed the way Black thinks about the future. He says he is no longer focused only on getting through each day. With steady work and a clearer plan, he is saving money, preparing for next steps, and thinking about long-term goals.

He has completed his Level 3 First Aid and recently interviewed for a First Aid Attendant position in Surrey. He is excited about the opportunities this could open in construction, events, firefighting, and other workplaces. Looking ahead, he also hopes to take a six-month Health and Safety Officer course in September.

Securing stable housing also remains an important goal for Black. He is currently living in an SRO and is grateful to have a roof over his head, but he hopes to move into a BC Housing unit with his own bathroom, shower, and kitchen. He has received a call from BC Housing and is preparing carefully so he can make the move with a plan in place.

Black says he has become more positive and optimistic since joining Mission Possible. “You’re not in the dark about anything,” he says. “All of a sudden, you’re at ease.”

During the summer months, support from donors becomes especially practical. For associates working outdoor shifts, supplies like water, sunscreen, cooling items, and weather-appropriate gear help them stay safe, focused, and ready to work. These essentials help make it possible for associates like Black to keep building momentum, even through the hottest days of the year.

“A lot of folks are getting sunburned, me included. Not a lot of people have access to sunscreen, or they're just living paycheque to paycheque, so having to buy sunscreen or having to buy water or water bottles could be a little expensive," Black shares.
