From Depleted to Determined: Arwin's Beginning

From Depleted to Determined: Arwin's Beginning

Arwin was born in the Netherlands and immigrated to Canada in 1968 at the age of four. Immigrating to a new country was a difficult experience, and he and his family worked hard to adapt and navigate this change. He even taught himself how to speak English in just six months by watching TV!

Arwin took an interest in graphic design, influenced by his artistic mother, and eventually received a four-year scholarship to the Alberta College of Art and Design. After an internship in New York, he returned to his alma mater, where he served as Dean of the Design Division for ten years.

When that chapter of his life closed, Arwin worked multiple jobs in various fields, eventually moving to BC and securing a leadership role at Home Depot. He expected to retire at Home Depot until an unexpected restructuring left him unemployed in his sixties.

Arwin began applying to several jobs with no luck, relying on just his savings to get by. "Every negative is some kind of learning experience,” he shares, but the weight of these challenges was hard to hold. At a time when he felt depleted, mentally and financially, he found Mission Possible.

Starting on the Clean Team served as a fresh start for Arwin. The fear of losing his home and the struggle to make ends meet motivated him to work hard in the Employment Readiness Program. “I feel like a failure at sixty-something… You feel like no one wants you… But I don't want to be that person. I've never wanted to be that person," he shares. So, he accessed as many of MP's wraparound supports as he could, including hot lunches, the community pantry, coaching, and resume and cover letter building.

Arwin notes that his confidence increased because he feels a sense of belonging while at work, and he’s experienced a shift in his mindset. "[MP] has helped to get out of that [negative] perspective,” he shares.

With renewed confidence in his abilities, Arwin could focus on what's next for him. “I’m looking to sharpen my skills in building services and outreach work. I’m also eager to support others, especially mature workers, who are facing transition,” he shares. Arwin shows up with heart and determination, and we are excited to share more about his journey next month!
